Glossary

CATARACT is a clouding of the lens in the eye that affects vision.

CONJUNCTIVA is the mucous membrane that lines the inner surface of the eyelid and the exposed surface of the eyeball.

DHA (dihydroxyacetone) is a dye that temporarily stains the skin, giving a tanned appearance. It is used in cosmetics and in fake tanning lotions, sprays and creams.

DYSPLASTIC NAEVUS - A type of mole (naevus) that looks different from a common mole. A dysplastic naevus is often larger with borders that are not sharply defined. Its colour is usually uneven and can range from pink to dark brown. Parts of the mole may be raised above the skin surface. A dysplastic naevus may develop into malignant melanoma.

ELECTROMAGNETIC SPECTRUM is the range of types of electromagnetic radiation displayed in order from longest to shortest wavelength.

PTERYGIUM is a triangular growth of thickened conjunctiva, usually occurring at the inner side of the eyeball and covering part of the cornea (eyeball). If a pterygium continues to grow across the cornea, it can interfere with vision. The exact cause is unknown, but exposure to ultraviolet radiation and hot, dry environments increases the risk. Anyone can develop a pterygium, but the condition is more common in the Northern parts of Australia and among people, such as farmers and fishermen, who spend a lot of time outdoors.

REGISTRABLE CANCER - a cancer which, when diagnosed, must be notified to the relevant State or Territory cancer registry under public health legislation. All cancers except non-melanoma skin cancers (basal cell carcinomas and squamous cell carcinomas) are registrable.

SOLARIUM - a commercial establishment containing one or more sun-tanning units. (Plural - Solaria or Solariums)
